Your Mind Power and Entertainment
by Irwin on Nov.08, 2009, under Self Improvement
Your mind power can benefit greatly from various forms of entertainment. Choosing the right television shows and movies to watch, the best books to read and listening to a variety of music are all ways to boost your mind power. You might think you turn your brain off while enjoying some of these preoccupations, but in actuality you can stimulate your brain and increase your mind power.
Watching movies in a theater, as opposed to at home on television or on a DVD, allows you to enjoy a plot larger than that of a television episode while also increasing your attention span. With a DVD, you can pause to take a break, and most television channels have commercials. While there are many quality shows on television now, it is easier to let your brain slip into relaxation mode. If you prefer television to movies, one good option to boost your mind power could be to rent or buy the DVD of a season of your favorite show and watch it in a marathon. This way, the commercials are removed and you can focus for longer periods of time than a half hour on television.
It comes as no surprise that reading books boosts your mind power. While it might be tempting to read during the commercials of a TV show, try setting aside time to focus on the written word. Whether reading a bestselling novel or a book that explicitly provides methods for expanding your mental capabilities, being able to focus solely on the book will allow you to understand it better.
Listening to music with well-written lyrics is not unlike reading good poetry. There are almost innumerable ways to listen to music. You can play it in the car to keep your mind focused. You can play it softly to unwind from a rough day. Pay close attention to the lyrics (provided you listen to music with vocals). This exercise in focus can help you develop your mind power by getting you to focus on your surroundings.
Even when you are entertaining yourself, try thinking about what might happen in the movie you are watching or the book you are perusing. See if your intuitive skills increase after practicing for some time. If you’re watching with someone else, you might want to keep your predictions to yourself or write them down, as you don’t want to spoil the experience for them. But predicting the next lines, plot, conclusion, etc. is a great intuitive exercise that can not only be fun, but can increase your mind power. It might seem contradictory to what you think, but even enjoying a thoughtfully written and plotted television show can help you to boost your mind power.
Your Mind Power and Education
by Irwin on Nov.08, 2009, under Self Improvement
Your mind power can grow stronger in several different ways, and one of the most obvious methods is to educate yourself. If you choose to educate yourself, there are multiple options you can take. You might want to consider something as intensive as enrolling in a higher education program, whether it is finishing an undergraduate degree or returning for a master’s or doctorate. You could do something that is still formalized but less intensive, such as taking some sort of evening class. Another great option is to learn a new skill yourself.
Enrolling in an institute of higher learning is a big thing to consider, but a good choice for many. If this is an option you choose to take later in life, it can be a great way to boost your mind power. Immersing yourself in an academic setting will stimulate your mind in several ways. From obtaining a deeper understanding of your core classes and expanding your knowledge with course requirements to writing your own theses and arguments on your subject. If you are able to afford to go back to school in this formal setting and have the time for it, know that it is a viable option to consider.
Perhaps you like the idea of attending the class, but you are limited by either budget or time. There are bound to be adult education centers in your area that can help boost your mind power. From creative writing workshops to cooking classes, you can likely find a class that suits your interests. In this type of class you are likely to meet people like yourself who share your interests. Not only will you be able to feel more confident in your newly learned or increased skill, you just might make a few new friends, too.
On television shows such as Top Chef and Project Runway there almost always seem to be contestants who claim to be self-taught. With tons of books and websites at your disposal, you too can learn how to cook gourmet meals or design couture gowns without any sort of formal training. This might be the best option of all for those who look for a great boost in your mind power, as all of the work depends on you. You must interact with either book or website, and you learn by doing as opposed by reading about it.
However you choose to increase your mental prowess, doing so by educating yourself is going to be a great service to yourself and your mind power.
Your Mind Power and Cooking
by Irwin on Nov.08, 2009, under Self Improvement
Your mind power has a direct relationship with your body, and feeding the latter can help you develop stronger mental abilities. You may not think that the kind of food you eat matters to your mind, but both mind and body will feel the boredom of a repeated meal. If you are looking to foster your mind power to become stronger, consider going to the kitchen for inspiration.
Cooking with new ingredients or a foreign style of cooking can be a great way to invigorate your mind and, in turn, balance your spiritual center. Learning about new foods and how to prepare them is a great way to educate yourself on some of the stranger selections you see every day in the grocery store and a great way to enlighten yourself to world cultures. Try not to think of this as a challenge, but rather a way to open up your mind. If you are not much in the kitchen, try following some basic recipes or see how a professional does it on television.
Cooking a nice meal can be a very rewarding way to spend your time. You may not think of it this way, but cooking is somewhat of an art. Some would certainly say that the beauty in a properly-cooked steak rivals that of Renaissance paintings (just remember that no one is expecting you to be Da Vinci). If you are resistant to viewing food as edible art, try thinking of it as a small project. The satisfaction you achieve from completing any project, no matter how small, is the same feeling you can get from cooking a nice dinner. This boost of positive energy will be fantastic for your mind power.
As your confidence in the kitchen grows, you will probably feel more self-assured in other areas of your life. Being able to believe in yourself and your abilities is a wonderful feeling that will help sustain your mind power. Learning to cook on an amateur level is not likely to inflate your ego into unmanageable proportions, which is good for keeping you level-headed.
Even if you learn to cook a few basic recipes or meals, you will surely notice the benefits. An improved confidence level awaits you upon finding and perfecting your signature dish. You will likely feel healthier after eating more meals cooked at home. Taking up cooking as either a necessary life skill or a serious hobby is a great way to balance your mind power.
Your Mind Power and Art
by Irwin on Nov.08, 2009, under Self Improvement
Your mind power and art can have a really interesting, multifaceted relationship. From learning about different artistic movements in various countries to testing your own artistic hand, enjoy the mental boost that art can give you. Looking around your favorite museum will let your mind blossom, opening it up to new experiences. Art can help your mind power grow to its full potential.
Look around your favorite museum and see if you can notice similarities between different artists who belong in the same movement. For example, many pre-Raphaelite artists featured figures with long, curly red hair in romantic settings. This is an exercise that will help you focus in a setting that could possibly make your head spin. If you prefer sculptures to paintings, try finding stylistic differences between Greco-Roman sculpture and other time periods up through modern and contemporary art. If you notice something as big a giveaway as representational vs. abstract art or something more nuanced, such as the aesthetics of the subject of the piece, you are exercising your mind power and letting it grow. Many museums offer either professionally-led or independent audio tours that can give you a great deal of information on particular pieces, artists and other aspects of the art world.
When you get home from spending some time at your favorite art museum, you might still have some lingering questions about specific pieces or what inspired various artists to create their art. Taking up your own artistic investigations can be a very rewarding endeavor that will allow you to expand your mind power. Learning and understanding what drove the artists who have come and gone can inspire you to create your own art. You may not be the next Picasso, but you can attempt to recreate previous styles. If your attempts do not stack up, try comparing what you have created to the artists you are studying. Even if you are not a great artist, you can incorporate the styles you have studied. Noticing the details of art is how you can boost your mind power.
While you may think of a museum as a boring place, or too quiet to be exciting, a good art museum can be very stimulating and enticing. If you take the time to look at the art, to really examine it and see how it works and what it is made of, you can learn quite a lot and increase your mind power.
Your Mind Power On the Go
by Irwin on Oct.27, 2009, under Self Improvement
Keeping your mind power in the best shape possible is essential to keeping up a busy lifestyle. There are a number of things you can do while on the go to keep you alert, and there are measures you can take at home to prepare you for your busiest days. Even small behavioral changes can have a big impact on your ability to function on big, hectic days.
Being able to release the stresses of a long day will help you get the most out of your sleep. Good sleep and good rest allow your body to recharge so that in the morning, you will be ready for the day’s adventures. Bad sleep is the number one way to have a bad day. Waking up still tired will make you cranky and less able to concentrate on important things all day. There are many good reasons you might not be able to sleep at your best, including work projects, but try going to bed early enough one night a week and see if you notice a difference.
From the moment you wake up, try to keep your brain in a balanced state of stimulation. If you drive to work, you know traffic is likely going to be heavy. Instead of spending all your efforts on traffic, try doing something in your car to calm yourself. An easy listening or light rock radio station (or your own similar music) can help you balance the unavoidable stress, leaving your mind power free for the rest of the day.
At work, it is important to take breaks and clear your head. Have some implements in your workspace that can help you relax. Stress dolls are one option, but a miniature Zen sand garden should not be ruled out either. Shop around for an option that appeals to you. You might not even need a physical object to help you relieve stress. Some alternative ideas could be to have a few positive affirmations, taking deep breaths, or some kind of calming chant.
Even though you are changing some of your behaviors, it is important that you remain in a comfortable place. Faze yourself into these lifestyle adjustments so as not to shock you. With this better balance in your life, your mind power will become noticeably stronger. Enjoy the benefit of having a clearer focus, more capable imagination or even an increase in things you are able to remember.
Your Mind Power in Pop Culture
by Irwin on Oct.27, 2009, under Self Improvement
Your mind power is finding more and more venues for itself in today’s pop culture world. With TV shows, movies, books and even music centering on various aspects of psychic talents or other mind powers researching how to improve your own abilities is a more entertaining task than ever before. Just be sure to supplement your TV watching with plenty of checked facts.
The television show Medium follows Allison DuBois, a real-life medium portrayed by award-winning actress Patricia Arquette. Allison is a medium who, on the show, is able to work with the police to solve criminal cases with the help of her clairvoyant dreams. She will often see a piece of a scenario related to the crime, and later in the episode, after learning more about what transpired, Allison will see larger portions of the first scenario. What is good about how Medium deals with clairvoyance is how she is unable to willfully summon visions. They come to her instead as dreams, in her subconscious. While her visions seem to be exclusively crime-related, the fundamentals and realities of her clairvoyance are depicted quite well.
You can take a page from the television representation of Allison DuBois (or several pages from the real Allison, as she has authored several books) and apply yourself to increase your mental capabilities. Try some mindfulness exercises. Slow down, breathe deeply and clear your head. This forced focus will let you better examine situations and come up with solutions.
Telepathy is another common feature in pop culture entertainment. The popular rock band The Killers has a song titled ‘Read My Mind,’ and Charlaine Harris’s Sookie Stackhouse series of books centers around a telepathic cocktail waitress. Telepathy is, basically, the ability to read minds. In life, it can be part of the unspoken language between close friends or siblings, or it can be as strong as it is depicted in popular entertainment. While telepathy is generally considered a ‘gift’ in its representations, it is more like a talent that one can cultivate with various brain exercises like puzzles and mnemonic sequences.
The frequency with which these abilities are alluded to and represented in the entertainment world is understandable. The desire to connect with the unknown is a potential factor in the popularity of your mind powers. The style in which these facilities are displayed also leans toward a fondness for superhuman abilities and super heroes. While none of us are Superman, we are all able to facilitate a stronger use of our unconscious mind’s abilities.
Your Mind Power at Work
by Irwin on Oct.27, 2009, under Self Improvement
No matter how stressful your job may or may not be, you will definitely want to be able to focus your mind power on it. With job security becoming increasingly less certain, it certainly would not hurt to take measures to ensure optimum performance. By taking turns relaxing and exercising your mind, you can make the most of your conscious mind.
You probably will not be able to take yoga breaks during the day at work, but if you are a yoga practitioner, you know the value of going through some poses at home. If your daily relaxation routine does not call for yoga or other physical activity, definitely take the time to loosen up at home. Try some soothing hot tea to remove the kinks accrued that day. Put on some soft music by a favorite artist or band. Maybe even pop in a favorite DVD. The important thing is to make time for yourself as often as possible.
If you do not participate in any sort of regular exercise, it might be a good idea to take up a light routine. Introductory yoga would be a great choice, but a more structured and traditional workout should not be ruled out. There is no need to feel overwhelmed by the prospect. Your yoga or workout cycle can be both light and beneficial. Some is better than none, after all.
As far as mental exercises, crossword puzzles, jumbles, and sudoku are widely available in daily newspapers. Even childhood favorites such as the word search can be helpful. Keeping your brain active during what you might have considered off hours is a good way that lets your mind power grow. With an increase in your mind power, performance at work will also advance. If you have a tough project on the table at work, it might be wise to take a break from it, work on a crossword puzzle and then return to it. With the break and the mental exercise, you just might look at the project in a new light and find a great way to overcome the obstacle.
While it might seem contrary to advise both relaxation and exercise to increase your mind power, doing both can be extraordinarily helpful. In performing converging activities, you stimulate different portions of your mind. These stimuli will help your focus at work and in other areas of your life. Give these methods a try, or think of your own ways to relax and exercise your mind. No one knows it better than you do.
Your Mind Power and Video Games
by Irwin on Oct.27, 2009, under Self Improvement
There is an almost endless array of ways to bump up your mind power. One of the more surprising methods you can use today is the video game. There has been a recent influx of games geared at brain boosting, but even regular video games on various systems can assist you in your quest. Today more than ever there is a video game to arouse even the most suspicious skeptic and nonbeliever.
Video games in general have become increasingly complex, especially with new advances in both console, the kind that hooks up to your television, and handheld systems. Graphics are becoming more realistic and gamers are becoming more involved mentally, and in some cases physically. Scientists have said for quite some time that video games can increase hand-eye coordination. Games like Dance Dance Revolution and the Nintendo Wii system allow for a full-body challenge while gaming. Brain Age is an excellent resource that will help you keep your mind fit.
Games that are geared toward piquing your mind power are most readily available on the Nintendo DS handheld system. Some games claim to make your brain “younger.” Basically, that type of game works on quick-thinking skills with a variety of puzzles, often having to do with numbers. These games may indeed make your brain feel younger, but many games oriented around solving puzzles can have the same effect, so beware of limiting yourself only to games that expressly describe themselves as mind-boosters.
By increasing your mind power or lowering your brain’s age, you can empower your brain in other ways. With enough experience playing games, you should be able to feel certain aspects before they happen. Your intuition and possibly even your clairvoyance will progress after learning the ins and outs of various game genres. These improved psychic talents will extend outside of the gaming world and into your everyday life. Supplementing your preexisting mind exercises with a controlled amount of video gaming can only improve your mind power.
For those of us looking for new or more fun ways to entertain our minds, taking up a video game hobby is a fun option. If you already have a healthy gaming habit you might want to add a more traditional approach for the maximum improvement of your mind power.
Nowadays, there is bound to be a video game to suit any taste. From story-based role-playing games to the puzzle challenges, investigate your options and see what works best for you, because exercise is not just for your body.
Motivational Positive Approaches to Self Improvement
by Irwin on Aug.30, 2009, under Self Improvement
Motivational positive approaches to self improvement are plenty fold. The real task is to apply them consistently. The best way to make sure that you’ll stick with the program is to make your motivational positive approach something that you enjoy, that you can put in place and forget about, or whatever it takes for you to integrate it into your lifestyle. Here are some ideas:
Positive Imagery
There is something called a vision or magic board that can constantly reinforce what you want in life. This is a fun and powerful exercise that will help keep your goals literally in sight. What you do is look for photos that represent or depict how you would life to look like. You can get these images from Google, magazines or many other sources. Simply paste them on to your vision board and put it in a prominent place where you’ll see it at least once a day.
As they say, seeing is believing. And believing is a precursor to achieving. So you need to get the vision in your mind and reinforced by your physical vision. Talk about a right brain/left brain collaboration!
I have a vision board that I put together with Photoshop. I pasted in the photos and words and then made several copies of it. So I have one in my desk drawer at work and home, and in my suitcase. So it’s almost impossible for me to avoid it. I laminated it as well. So I can travel with it if I want without it getting destroyed.
Be creative with your vision board. After all, it’s your vision!
Get it on Paper
Another motivational positive approach is to write it down. Get it out of your head and on paper. There’s something powerful about setting a goal and committing it to paper, It’s important to get things out of y our head and on paper. The goals will seem less daunting, you’ll be able to prioritize them, and set benchmarks and timelines for them as well.
I keep two to do lists. One is a daily list and the other is a life goals to do list. The daily to do list identifies small, mundane things to do. The other list identifies big goals such as where and when I plan to travel, when I plan to offer my mentoring program, etc. It’s important to identify target dates, quantities, resources needed, etc. The more specific the better. And if you can tie your big goals into your daily to do list, you’ll be more likely to achieve them.
For instance, if you want to retire in 2012 with two million dollars in the bank, what do you have to do to make that happen? Breaking your goals down to realistic tasks and timelines will make them more meaningful and realistic. If you can’t do this, then your goals are probably pie in the sky.
Some people believe that just by visualizing and wishing for something to happen that it will. Well, they may be right, but my experience is that I am most successful when I prepare for things and work for them, as well as believing that they will happen.
So yes, use the vision board, but also break down your goals into tiny chunks so that you can do the day to day things to make them happen.
Self Improvement – the Basis for Wellness
by Irwin on Aug.23, 2009, under Self Improvement, Wellness
Self improvement is the reason people are increasingly moving towards the wellness philosophy. Self improvement involves the intent to make ones life better in one or more ways. The same goes with wellness. But the main difference between the two terms is that wellness is a more defined philosophy, whereas self improvement is a very general term to use. So I will discuss wellness so you can get a handle on self improvement and integrate it into your life.
For the purposes of this discussion, when I say wellness, you may want to think self improvement if that makes it easier for you. The major foundation of wellness is self responsibility. We are by and large responsible for creating our world. So aside from unforeseen and genetic circumstances, our world is the result of actions or inactions by us for our entire lives, for better and for worse.
There are those who would argue that even genetic traits and unfortunate circumstances of birth are of our own making, and that they are either carryovers (Karma) from our past lives and/or that we have asked to be born in a particular way or under a particular set of circumstances. But that discussion is best had on another day. Suffice it to say that if I do not like something about my life, I need to take responsibility for it and change it.
Wellness can best be seen on a scale, a wellness scale. On one extreme of the scale is disease and death, and on the other extreme, wellness, health, Nirvana, perfection or some other ideal that we strive towards. We are somewhere on the wellness scale in every aspect of our lives and are either moving towards disease and death or towards health and perfection.
While on this earth, we will never reach Nirvana or perfection, but it is something to strive towards. Unfortunately, we will all die, but the journey between birth and death is largely of our own making.
Another aspect of wellness is that every aspect of our lives can be measured on the wellness scale. Any aspect of your life, including love, finance, exercise, stress, career, assertiveness, etc., can be measured on this scale.
The good news and bad news is that when you move up or down in any aspect of your lifestyle, other aspects of your lifestyle are either pulled up or pushed down as well. For instance, if you start exercising regularly, chances are that you will also take a look at and improve your diet and nutrition. And since exercise makes you think more clearly, you will probably be able to look at other aspects of your lifestyle and move towards wellness in those areas as well.
There are also byproducts of improving in one area of your life. If we look at the exercise example, you would experience a reduction is your stress levels, improve your immune system, become more confident, and a host of other positive side effects.
On the other hand, if you develop a drinking habit, then your career, love life, relationships with others, health and other aspects of your lifestyle will probably suffer and move down the wellness scale towards disease and death.
So the name of the game in self improvement is to take responsibility for your life, diagnose and evaluate your lifestyle and choose the most effective way to improve your life in the most common sense order for you. But the main point is to do something. Anything! And to any degree. Just improve something, in some area of your life, to some degree, to start to move towards wellness, and you will see a magnificent ripple effect in all aspects of your lifestyle eventually. Good luck!
